Dr. Dorothea Altschul’s dedication to increasing stroke awareness is no secret.
Throughout her career, Dr. Altschul has hosted educational programs, taken part in studies, and appeared in video and on the radio to talk to both the public and other doctors about identifying and treating stroke.
Dr. Altschul recently paired her energetic commitment to the cause of stroke awareness with that of the American Heart Association. As part of their Go Red for Women campaign, they have named Dr. Altschul a Luminary of the Heart for 2015.
The AHA’s Go Red for Women campaign is a movement dedicated to educating women about heart disease, the number one cause of death among women.
Each year, the Association appoints “Luminaries of Heart” to help raise funds for research and education about heart disease, including stroke.
Dr. Altschul made a goal of raising $30,000.00 for the Go Red for Women campaign.
A stroke occurs when blood flow to part of your brain is reduced or interrupted. Symptoms can include difficulty speaking, drooping on one side of the face, headache, or weakness on one side of the body.
Understanding the symptoms can help those around the person suffering the stroke to get help fast. This is key to reducing the damage caused by a stroke.
Dr. Altschul studied minimally invasive techniques for solving problems of the brain’s blood vessels (including stroke) at both Columbia University and Harvard. Her knowledge in these areas and her passion for sharing this information make her a great ambassador for stroke awareness.
