Facing surgery is a scary thing. Patients don’t know what to expect and they have a lot of questions. Neurosurgeons of New Jersey offers Pre-surgical Information Sessions to help prepare patients and answer their questions. Nurse practitioner Ann Finck leads the sessions.
Mrs. Finck is an experienced nurse who has instructed other nurses on caring for Neuro patients. She has also developed patient pre-operative teaching programs at Columbia University Medical Center/New York Presbyterian Hospital. She has over 47 years of clinical experience and received Columbia University’s Clinical Nursing Excellence Award in 2012.
“She is a dedicated teacher and has the power of bringing a smile to everyone’s face no matter the situation,” says Dr. Anthony D’Ambrosio, neurosurgeon at the Ridgewood office. “Ann is truly the best.”
Mrs. Finck’s great bedside manner and high level of experience are a great combination. Patients attending a pre-surgical information session receive important information in a friendly setting. This takes some of the stress out of the situation and lets patients and their support focus on the surgery and recovery.
Some of the topics covered in the session are; hospital routines, monitoring equipment, descriptions of procedures, staffing information about nurses and technicians, and a virtual hospital tour.
Neurosurgeons of New Jersey’s patients report that the session is a positive experience. One patient says, “It put me and my wife at ease knowing all the stages I would go through, who the team members were, what the rooms looked like, and where my wife could go during my procedure.” (February 2015)
Surgery is a big event, but the Pre-surgical Information Session can take away some of the mystery.
