No matter how super our heroes are depicted in comics and films, they can struggle. There are times when the characters suffer extreme injury to their central nervous system, leaving them broken. While heroes like Wolverine or Deadpool have the ability to regenerate and continue fighting, other—more human—heroes (such as Batman) need a little help to recover, just like us. But luckily for us, we have our very own Dr. Michael Kaiser MD, FACS, FAANS, a renowned neurosurgeon, to help us here in New Jersey.

Dr. Kaiser Returns to Comic Con

On July 25th, Dr. Kaiser returned to California to participate as a featured panelist in the world-famous San Diego Comic Con. Dr. Kaiser spoke in Brainstorms and Battle Scars, an AMA (Ask Me Anything) for neurological injuries in comics and pop culture.

In this question & answer session, the doctors wanted to compare and contrast brain and spine injuries from the real world to the ones we see in superhero stories and movies. They explained how head and back injuries really work and how people can recover. The doctors used their knowledge to show what really happens compared to what is just made up in the stories. They made it easy to understand by comparisons with our favorite superheroes and comic book tales.

It's time to get back to doing what you love.

Dr. Kaiser’s Neurological Expertise

Once again, Dr. Kaiser brought a rich level of neurological expertise to the world of comics as he discussed the likelihood of heroes such as Batman and Batgirl recovering from their various spinal injuries. He explained the realities of spinal cord or nerve root injuries and the surgical interventions such as anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) that might be required. However, he also answered questions beyond the world of comics: commenting on injuries from the TV series Shogun, future neurosurgical innovations for spinal cord injuries, and how his own team of “Avengers” help care for patients.

Yet the most heartwarming discussions came from guests who brought in their own personal experiences with neurological injuries. These guests shared their remarkable experiences and recoveries and thanked Dr. Kaiser and all other neurosurgeons for their work in helping them rise from their lowest points, showing us that while they may not have superpowers, we too have our own heroes here at Neurosurgeons of New Jersey.
