Medical News Correspondent, Dr. Jay Adlersberg and his ABC7 News team visited the Gamma Knife Center at Valley Hospital where they interviewed Dr. D’Ambrosio and two of his patients. Dr. D’Ambrosio’s patient Theckla Martino describes the agony of trigeminal neuralgia and says that since her treatment, she has been completely pain free. “I don’t even think about it anymore,” she says.
Trigeminal neuralgia is a facial pain syndrome most common in people over the age of 50. While the causes can vary, the most common is thought to be compression of the trigeminal nerve by a blood vessel near the brainstem. Medication is the first line of treatment and if that fails, the condition can be successfully treated using the Gamma Knife. The Gamma Knife delivers a highly precise dose of radiation to the trigeminal nerve in a painless outpatient procedure.
