We are thrilled to announce the addition of neurosurgeon Dr. Luigi Bassani to our Neurosurgeons of New Jersey practice. While he is a new addition to our practice, Dr. Bassani is well known to pediatricians and families in NJ from his two years as Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Rutgers/University Hospital.
Dr. Bassani graduated cum laude from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA and went on to attend Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. Dr. Bassani completed his General Surgery internship and Neurological Surgery residency at New York University Langone Medical Center.After completing his training, he pursued subspecialty training in Pediatric Neurosurgery at Primary Children’s Hospital at the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City, Utah.
After fellowship he joined the Department of Neurological Surgery at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark, NJ as Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery and Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery. There he cared for pediatric patients with brain and spinal cord tumors, congenital brain and spinal anomalies, hydrocephalus and traumatic brain and spinal cord injury.During his first year in practice, Dr. Bassani was named as one of New Jersey’s Favorite Kids’ Docs for Pediatric Neurosurgery for 2015 in New Jersey Family magazine.
Dr. Bassani specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of a broad range of pediatric brain and spinal disorders, including hydrocephalus, craniosynostosis, spasticity, spinal dysraphisms (tethered cord, spinal lipomas), epilepsy and vascular malformations such as Moyamoya, arteriovenous malformations and cavernous malformations. While practicing a broad range of pediatric neurosurgery, his subspecialty interests lies in the treatment of congenital craniovertebral junction anomalies such as complex chiari malformations and syringomyelia, cervical spine trauma and pediatric brain tumors, mirroring the extensive clinical training in spinal disorders and brain tumors he obtained at Primary Children’s Hospital and NYU Langone Medical Center. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Bassani has published multiple articles and chapters on epilepsy, spasticity, cervical spine techniques and treatment of hydrocephalus.
Dr. Bassani also practices general adult neurosurgery, focusing on primary brain tumors and brain metastasis, cervical and lumbar herniated discs, spinal degeneration and fractures and hydrocephalus, utilizing advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques where applicable. He is particularly interested in continuing care of adults with congenital pediatric neurosurgical pathology such as hydrocephalus (including normal pressure hydrocephalus), epilepsy, tethered cords, chiari malformations, spasticity and brain tumors.
Dr. Bassani is bringing his depth of experience to our new clinic in Livingston as part of the St. Barnabas Ambulatory Care Medical Center. He is particularly excited about teaming up with the leading pediatric neurosurgery group in NJ and partnering with Dr. Richard Anderson. He is committed to providing outstanding care and expertise to both his adult and pediatric patients and their families. He is now seeing patients at the Barnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center in Livingston and looks forward to serving the population in Short Hills, Millburn, Maplewood, West Orange, Florham Park, Morristown, and many other communities in the Essex County region.
Dr. Bassani will accept several different types of health insurance including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, United Healthcare Empire, United/Oxford, worker’s compensation and Medicare and welcomes new and returning patients at the clinic at 200 South Orange Avenue, Suite 265, Livingston, NJ.
