Skin Biopsy

What is a Skin Biopsy?

A skin biopsy is a procedure in which a skin tissue sample is removed and observed under a microscope.

Indications

There are many reasons why patients may require a skin biopsy.  Typically, biopsies for identifiable skin lesions are performed by dermatologists to rule out skin cancers, skin rashes, or infections.  Skin biopsies may also be important in the work up of neuromuscular disorders, and are often performed by neurosurgeons as part of this investigation.  For example, amyloidosis, sarcoidosis, and dermatomyositis are disorders that can affect the nervous system, and can be diagnosed by skin biopsy.

Technique

The skin sample is generally a full-thickness sample that includes the epidermis, dermis, and the subcutaneous fat. Commonly, an ellipse of skin is removed in one piece, using a local anesthetic and mild sedation to ensure patient comfort.
