For someone facing surgery, learning that there is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional open surgery can be a big relief.
Dr. William Christopher Fox gave a talk recently at The Valley Hospital on minimally invasive spine surgery. The session was well received and indicated a high level of interest in the community.
Dr. Fox shared images that showed the dramatic differences between open surgery and minimally invasive procedures and listed details about the many benefits. These can include shortened operating and recovery time, less blood loss, and reduced use of pain medication.
The presentation discussed the advantages of minimally invasive spine surgery and gave examples of conditions where a minimally invasive procedure could replace a traditional one. Some of the most common procedures are ones that remove damaged discs from the spine or repair vertebrae.
These and several other disorders can often be treated with minimally invasive techniques. Dr. Fox emphasizes the need for good information when deciding on a treatment plan.
“The interest in minimally invasive spine surgery is high,” Dr. Fox says. “I’m passionate about educating patients on their options. I believe this empowers them to make the best decision about their spine health.”
The Valley Hospital serves hundreds of thousands of northern New Jersey residents and is the second busiest hospital in the state.
Dr. Fox’s medical experience includes three years as a neurosurgeon in the United States Navy and his specialties include minimally invasive treatments of brain and spine disorders. He is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Neurosurgery at Columbia University Medical Center/New York-Presbyterian Hospital and is based at our Ridgewood office.
