Congratulations to the AANS/CNS Section on Tumors, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. And special congratulations to Dr. Anthony D’Ambrosio, who helped produce a supplement commemorating that anniversary.
The 30th anniversary supplement was recently published by the Journal of Neuro-Oncology (see cover at left).
For the last two years, Dr. D’Ambrosio has served as Historian for the AANS/CNS Section on Tumors. It’s easy to understand why he finds it so fascinating; brain tumor treatments have advanced at an astounding rate over the last 30 years.
His role as historian prepared Dr. D’Ambrosio well for his role as co-editor of the anniversary supplement. As guest editor, Dr. D’Ambrosio solicited and edited thorough, well-written articles from leading neurosurgeons. The articles delve into the history of brain tumor research and treatment, and also explore up-to-the-minute current practice.
The articles cover the history and current practice of topics such as imaging (that is, MRIs and CT scans), surgery, and medication. They investigate advances in radiation (like gamma knife radiosurgery), genetic studies, vaccine therapies, and stem cell research. They also discuss the world of neuro-oncology as seen through the patient’s eyes.

The supplement includes a thoughtful reflection on the AANS/CNS Tumor Section’s own role as well–past, present and future. Some articles present the organization’s past accomplishments and examine its changing role over time. Another article helps today’s physicians stay current by providing an up-to-date set of guidelines for clinical practice. And the articles also look to the future, anticipating and planning for upcoming challenges.
Founded in 1984, the AANS/CNS Section on Tumors is the world’s oldest group dedicated to research and treatment of brain tumors. At this exciting time in the group’s history, Dr. D’Ambrosio has enjoyed the chance to contribute as a neurosurgeon, a historian and an editor.
