Several of our neurosurgeons, who specialize in spine surgery at The Valley Hospital, were featured in a recent article written for The Record in Hackensack, New Jersey. The article was titled “New Era in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery On the Horizon at The Valley Hospital” (you can read more here).
Minimally invasive spine (MIS) surgery is one of the latest advancements in spinal care. Surgeons use computer assisted technology and advanced imaging methods to manipulate micro-instruments through smaller incisions.
“MIS techniques have been shown to minimize blood loss, lower pain levels after surgery and reduce the need for pain medications,” said Dr. Christopher Fox, subspecialty director of minimally invasive spine surgery at The Valley Hospital, in the article. “This ultimately results in a faster recovery time and earlier return to activity for patients. In many cases, patients go home on the same day as their procedure.”
Dr. Alfred Ogden, a fellowship-trained MIS neurosurgeon, added, “MIS techniques are valuable operative tools that allow surgeons to formulate an optimal treatment plan while providing state-of-the-art care for our patients.”
MIS surgery is being used to treat intractable back pain, stenosis, spinal instability, compression fractures and even spinal cancer.
